Port Arthur. On the Gulf Coast of Texas.  90 miles east of Houston.  Envisioned by Arthur E. Stilwell as  a port City and the  terminus of the railroad he would eventually build linking Port Arthur to Kansas City

After gaining control of the Stilwell interest in 1900, John W. "Bet-A-Million" Gates built a rice mill in Port Arthur.  Gates spent $1.4 million to dredge the Port Arthur ship canal, then deeded it to the federal government for a dollar.

Congress sealed the deal by designating Port Arthur as a port of entry.  Pretty good thing because by 1914, the Port of Port Arthur ranked as the twelfth largest port in the US and the second largest refining port.

Fast forward. Today, Port Arthur is the home of major refineries and remains the terminus of the Kansas City Southern railroad.

1900 population,1000.  2000 census, almost 60,000.  Here's to a diversified economy.
