Things
to Do
Great
Barrier Reef. British Virgin Islands. You may think you've seen it all, and
it takes a couple plane rides to get there. Then you see Mobile. And beauty's
been forever redefined in your mind. Ambiance galore. Not to mention adventure.
And you don't even need fins and a snorkel. Kick your shoes off and get comfortable
over at Mama's on Dauphin Street for some home cooking. Try the Meatloaf,
or country-fried steak. Salad your cup of tea? Then roll down the street to
Downtowners for some classic sweet tea, chicken sandwiches, lighter fare
and brighter art. And check out the cool murals. Submarines? B-52s? Battleships?
USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. Like Exotic Wildlife and Western
Theme Parks? HQH Western World & Zoo in nearby Wilmer. Home to endangered,
and non, wildlife. Want to put on your groove? Blues to rock and beyond, Mobile
Saenger Theatre on Joachim Street. How about a moonlit stroll on the beach
for a nightcap? Head over to Dauphin Island for the endless colors riding the
surf and cool breeze. And then wake up. And do it all over again.
History
& Facts
Discovery,
more often than not, is a series of progressive explorations and rediscoveries.
A culmination of evidence, rather than a single moment of revelation. As it
was with Mobile.
Mobile was scoped out on numerous expeditions from 15 to 1700 by a slew of Spanish
navigators hailing from Florida, Jamaica, and elsewhere. All gravitating to
the naturally rich delta river valley, fertile ground for the hunting-gathering
flock. Diego Miruelo. Alonso Alvarez de Pineda. Panfilo de Narvaez. Cabeza de
Vaca. Hernando de Soto. And many others... An interesting process, discovery.
Local natives living in the Mobile Bay region might have a thing or to say on
the subject, given they'd been around the area since 2700 B.C.
Claims of discovery and ownership in the early years may have changed hands
faster than a Vegas poker dealer pulling double-duty. But one thing didn't change:
Mobile was loaded with natural resources. Providing an ideal homeport for the
seagoing trade. Rice. Cattle. Tobacco. Corn. Beef. Fish. Oranges. Lumber. Cotton.
The list goes on. And when it comes down to it, commerce, not deeds of discovery,
is the driving catalyst for economic expansion. Little wonder that Mobile has
become, and maintained, its stature as a leading international commerce hub
on the Gulf Coast.
